October 17, 2006 - Veterans

JEAN: I'm Jean Hay Bright, Democratic running for U.S. Senate.

I have always opposed the war in Iraq but I have always supported our troops and our veterans. Olympia Snowe supports the war in Iraq, but she does no support our troops. She voted with her Republican counterparts to deny full medical care for our returning troops. And she voted against bankruptcy protection for families of our good military men and women serving overseas. We need to stop this war now. And we need to start fully funding the benefits and medical care our returning troops and veterans so rightly deserve. They upheld their end of the bargain, the government must uphold its end. As a military wife during the Vietnam war, this hits close to home.

October 17, 2006 - Medicare

JEAN: I'm Jean Hay Bright, Democratic running for U.S. Senate.

My Republican opponent, Olympia Snowe, voted for Medicare Part B, even though she knew it banned negotiation of drug prices. She voted for Medicare Part B even though she knew the doughnut hole would hurt many low income seniors. Now she supports allowing Americans to re-import drugs from Canada, but if our government had been able to negotiate prices in the first place we would not need to re-import drugs from Canada, and we likely would not need the doughnut hole because drug prices would be so much lower, most Americans would never reach that limit. It is a bit like the arsonist who set the fire and then wants credit for helping to put it out.

ANNOUNCER: Authorized and paid for by Jean Hay Bright, U.S. Senate, David Bright, Treasurer. On the web at JeanHayBright.US.

JEAN: Olympia Snowe has been in office for twenty-eight years, four years longer then Margaret Chase Smith. Isn't it time to elect someone who will fight to get it right the first time? I'm Jean Hay Bright, I'm running for U.S. Senate, and I approved this message.

October 17, 2006 - Energy

JEAN: I'm Jean Hay Bright, Democratic running for U.S. Senate.

We need a national policy of conservation and energy self-sufficiency through renewable resources. I'm talking solar, wind, tidal, hydro, geothermal, and things like bio-diesel, ethanol, and other fuels made from annual crops and trees. I'm talking cleaner air. I'm talking jobs — good paying, quality jobs — designing, building, installing and maintaining this new energy infrastructure. I'm also talking national security and changes in our foreign policy. We get this done and our so-called leaders won't feel the need to invade other countries and steal their oil resources to keep our society going.

JEAN: My name is Jean Hay Bright, I'm running for U.S. Senate, and I approved this message.

October 17, 2006 - Choice

JEAN: I'm Jean Hay Bright, Democratic running for U.S. Senate, and I approved this message.

My Republican opponent claims she stands up for the rights of women but she voted to confirm Judge Samuel Alito for the Supreme Court even though she knew Judge Alito has a plan to dismantle Roe v. Wade. Olympia Snowe was the last senator to vote. Judge Alito was already safely confirmed. Snowe could have kept all the women's groups in her camp by symbolically voting against Judge Alito's confirmation. By voting to confirm, Olympia Snowe told us very clearly where she stood on choice. Now we know what kind of America Olympia Snowe wants women to live in.

When it comes to pro-choice, there's only one choice in this election.

ANNOUNCER: Authorized and paid for by Jean Hay Bright, U.S. Senate, David Bright, Treasurer. To become a part of this progressive campaign, log on to www.JeanHayBright.US.

JEAN: I'm Jean Hay Bright and I approved this message. On November 7th, vote for the America you want to live in.

October 17, 2006 - Time for Snowe to Go

JEAN: Olympia Snowe voted to start and keep this war going. Now in an election year conversion, she says 'staying the course' is neither an option nor a plan. I say re-electing Snowe is neither an option nor a plan. Twenty-eight years in Congress is enough. I'm Jean Hay Bright, I'm running for U.S. Senate and I approved this message. It's time for Snowe to go.

May 26, 2006 - Out of Iraq

JEAN: The Iraq War has been a disaster, no matter how you count. I'm Jean Hay Bright, Democrat for U.S. Senate, and I say we need to get out, now. Not just our troops, but outfits like Halliburton. We need to make Iraq off-limits to all American corporations. We also stop building permanent military bases in Iraq. We just stop, and go home. They can drink any Starbucks coffee we leave behind.

To maximize stability, we coordinate our pull-out with the Iraqi government, its allies in the region, the UN and European countries. The oil fields and all the associated infrastructure gets turned back to the Iraqi government. If we want their oil, we buy it from them.

We will be paying for this Bush-made disaster for many decades. But with us out of the way, the reconstruction and healing can begin.

May 4, 2006 - Vision

JEAN: My name is Jean Hay Bright. I'm a writer, organic farmer, and a Democrat running for U.S. Senate.

Taking back Olympia Snowe's seat is the only way Maine Democrats have this year to change the agenda in the U.S. Senate. How Maine Democrats vote in the June primary, who they pick to face off against Olympia Snowe, will make a difference in what happens next in this country.

Do you want a senator proud of where she comes from? One with a long history of working in and for Maine? A senator with backbone? One who speaks out for what she believes in? And what you believe in? I think you do.

Compare my writing, speeches and activism the past quarter-century with Olympia Snowe's abysmal voting record, and you will see that, as Olympia Snowe's first woman opponent, I provide a clear choice in this race.

ANNOUNCER: Paid for by Jean Hay Bright U.S. Senate, thanks to contributions from people like you. To become a part of this progressive campaign, log on to JeanHayBright.US.

JEAN: I'm Jean Hay Bright, and I'm asking for your vote. It's not just a vote for me, it's a vote for the America we all want to live in.

May 4, 2006 - Health Care

JEAN: Have you noticed? Republicans passed a Medicare drug plan so bad that some who voted for it are now talking about throwing it out and starting over. Republicans repeatedly pass health care benefits for Veterans, and then repeatedly under-fund those programs, leaving veterans unprotected.

Republican reliance on private insurance plans have forced our largest corporations to lay off thousands of workers because they can no longer afford to manufacture goods in America.

I'm Jean Hay Bright, a Democrat running for U.S. Senate.

Health care in this country is broken. And we're all going broke along with it. Let's fix it.

When America adopts a national health care program, covering all Americans, we won't have to argue about who gets drug benefits, or Veteran's benefits, or employee benefits. That's because we will all be on the same plan.

May 4, 2006 - True National Security

JEAN: My name is Jean Hay Bright, and I'm a Democrat running for U.S. Senate.

True national security is NOT confiscating pen knives and knitting needles, or tying up traffic at the border.

True national security is a fair tax code, a sustainable economy, and a manufacturing base restored to its former luster. It's a skilled and educated work force, a safe work place, a decent day's pay for an honest day's work. It's a commitment to renewable energy, conservation, alternative fuels, and a foreign policy based on peace, not exploitation. It's growing safe and healthy food, understanding and protecting the environment, caring about clean air and clean water.

My campaign for U.S. Senate is about these values. I'm asking all Democrats who share these values to vote for me in the June 13 primary.

Mar. 14, 2006 - Imagine

JEAN: Imagine a strong, outspoken pro-choice, pro-labor woman Democrat representing Maine in the U.S. Senate. Imagine that woman Democratic Senator voting to stop the war in Iraq. And voting to start national single-payer health care.

My name is Jean Hay Bright, and I am running for U.S. Senate.

I win the Democratic primary in June, and Olympia Snowe will face her first woman opponent in her entire 28 years in Congress.

And the choice in November, between Olympia Snowe and me, will not be a race between a pro-choice liberal and a pro-choice moderate. With her votes for Judge Alito and the Republican agenda, Olympia Snowe has proven she is neither pro-choice nor moderate. Olympia Snowe has become a Bush-enabler.

Mar. 14, 2006 - Inside/Outside Strategy

JEAN: In political circles, it's known as the "inside/outside strategy." Marches, petition drives, rallies, sit-ins are "outside" strategies -- designed to change the minds, and the votes, of incumbent politicians who don't agree with our way of thinking. Working to replace those politicians with people who do share our views, and our vision for America, is the "inside" part of that strategy.

My name is Jean Hay Bright, and I'm running for U.S. Senate against Olympia Snowe.

Activist politics connects people, empowers people to stand up for what they believe. And that is good. But from my perspective, that empowerment is a means to an end.

The bottom line for me is getting our people in positions of power, so we control the agenda, so our side casts the deciding votes, and we take back our America.

ANNOUNCER: Paid for by Jean Hay Bright U.S. Senate, thanks to contributions from people like you. To become a part of this progressive campaign, log on to JeanHayBright.US.

JEAN: I'm Jean Hay Bright. Let's all work, march, speak out -- and vote -- for the America we want to live in.

Mar. 14, 2006 - Wiretapping

JEAN: I'm Jean Hay Bright, Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate. I am furious at yet another scandal in Washington, this one the Bush administration's warrant-less wiretapping of American citizens. And I am not alone. The New York Times March 9 editorial said:

"Faced with a president who is almost certainly breaking the law, the Senate sets up a panel to watch him do it, and calls that control."
That New York Times editorial pointed to Maine Senator Olympia Snowe's complicity in the situation, calling it, quote, "disappointing."

In a March 12 editorial, the Los Angeles Times also nailed Olympia Snowe for her sponsorship of that proposal, and for voting with her fellow Republicans in rejecting an investigation into the President's actions. Clearly, Olympia Snowe is part of the problem. It's time for a change.

Feb. 8, 2006 - Organic Farmer

JEAN: I'm Jean Hay Bright, Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate. For 30 years in Maine, I've made my living as a writer and as an organic farmer, first in Blue Hill and now in Dixmont. Organic farmers are environmentalists. We work WITH nature instead of against it, to grow healthy food in a sustainable environment.

Not only does George Bush think he can ignore the laws of this great land of ours, but he thinks that he can ignore the Laws of Nature.

Global warming is real. Hurricanes are more devastating. Asthma and diabetes are now epidemic. Yet the Kyoto Climate Change treaty is unsigned, GMO food is unlabeled, car mileage and pollution standards are irresponsibly low, and drilling in ANWR is still on the table.

If you like the idea of having an organic farmer as your next U.S. Senator, join our campaign and help send me to Washington. I'm Jean Hay Bright and I approved this message.

Feb. 8, 2006 - Balanced Budget

JEAN: I'm Jean Hay Bright, Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate.

As a reporter and Bureau Chief for the Bangor Daily News in the 70s and 80s, I watched local and state office holders constantly wrestle with the delicate balance between essential community services and a fair tax structure.

I see none of that balance in the Bush Administration or the Republicans in Congress. The illegal war in Iraq is driving this country into bankruptcy. Medicare, Medicaid, student loans, food stamps, home heating assistance are under constant threat.

But the wealthy keep getting those tax breaks.

Just recently, the choice in the Senate was billions in tax breaks on UNEARNED income, or better medical care for veterans. Senator Olympia Snowe had the gall to vote AGAINST better medical care for our veterans.

Feb. 1, 2006 - Working Families

JEAN: I'm Jean Hay Bright, Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate.

We need to start looking out for working families. It's long past time we had national single-payer health care. The minimum wage should be a living wage. OSHA standards should be tightened, and enforced. Pensions and Social Security must be protected. We need to get out of NAFTA and CAFTA, and put Americans back to work.

Last fall Senator Olympia Snowe voted against raising the federal minimum wage above $5.15 an hour. Olympia Snowe favors repeal of the estate tax, and wants more tax cuts for the wealthy. Olympia Snowe voted for the draconian Bankruptcy Bill, even though half of all bankruptcies can be traced to medical emergencies.

Olympia Snowe is not a moderate.

Feb. 1, 2006 - Iraq War

JEAN: I'm Jean Hay Bright, Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate.

The invasion of Iraq was illegal and unprovoked. More than 2,000 of our good military men and women and at least 30,000 Iraqis have died. We are an occupying army in a country that wants us gone. Our bombs have destroyed Iraq, and the torture, the secret prisons, the corruption scandals have destroyed America's reputation as a moral country.

Senator Olympia Snowe voted for the Iraq War Resolution, and for every war funding bill since. She voted for the Patriot Act. She voted, twice, last fall to deny habeas corpus rights to our Guantanamo Bay detainees.

Olympia Snowe is not a moderate.

Jan. 27, 2006 - Alito pre-vote

This ad on Air America in the Portland area aired the week before the Alito confirmation vote, which came on Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2006. Senator Susan Collins announced her support for Judge Alito Thursday afternoon, Jan. 26, 2006. Senator Olympia Snowe, at the very last moment, voted to confirm Judge Alito.

I'm Jean Hay Bright, Democratic candidate for U.S. Senate. As a long-time pro-choice activist, I'm concerned about Judge Alito's public animosity toward Roe v. Wade, and his dismissive attitude toward women. I'm alarmed that Judge Alito believes the President has the authority to alter or disregard any law he chooses.

Our Constitution establishes a balance of power between the three branches of government. Judge Alito on the Supreme Court presents a clear and present danger to that balance. A President already grasping at power unheard of in our nation's history, and a complicit Supreme Court stacked in the President's favor, does not bode well for the continuation of freedom and democracy in America.

Maine's two Senators refused to say where they stood until Alito's confirmation became publicly assured. Now their votes are simply irrelevant. Even if they ultimately vote the right way, I, for one, will not be applauding a decision made too late to make a difference.
